Lilongwe, Malawi – On May 3 and May 6, 2023, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi) will hold a series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, writes Winston Mwale.

This year's theme, "Shaping a Future of Rights: Free Expression as a Driver for All Other Rights," emphasizes the importance of press freedom and independent media as essential components of human rights.

To commemorate this milestone, MISA Malawi has organized a series of activities that will bring together journalists, civil society organizations, and government officials to discuss the role of free expression and press freedom in Malawi.

The events will begin with a breakfast engagement with President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, followed by a Freedom March, two-panel discussions, a networking football match, and MISA Malawi's Annual Media Awards Gala Dinner.

MISA Malawi Chairperson Teresa Ndanga highlighted the significance of the event and its theme, stating, “The activities MISA Malawi has lined up will provide space and opportunity to engage and work together to protect press freedom, reaffirm the vital importance of freedom of expression, and shape a future where human rights are at the centre of decision-making at the national, regional, and district level."

On May 3, a panel discussion on "Access to Information in Malawi: Progress and Challenges Three Years After Commencement of the ATI Legislation" will be held at the Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.

The panel will examine the status of the implementation of the Access to Information (ATI) legislation and the steps journalists, civil society, and others can take to support its effective implementation.

On May 6, a Freedom March will take place from Gate Way Complex to Mtolankhani House, followed by a panel discussion on "30th Anniversary of World Press Freedom Day: Is the Malawi Media Free?" at Mtolankhani House.

The panel will focus on the state of freedom of expression in Malawi and how the media can help citizens enjoy their rights.

The events will conclude with a networking football match and the MISA Malawi Annual Media Awards Gala Dinner.

This celebration provides a crucial opportunity to discuss and debate the development of human rights and the crucial role that free expression plays in protecting and enjoying human rights in a constantly changing world.
