MISA Malawi Training Centre Fundraising Fun Run Raises MK6.7 Million

Malawi-The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) in Malawi has raised MK6.7 million during the Training Centre Fundraising Fun Run fundraising event held in Lilongwe on February 25th, 2023, writes Esther Banda.

The money raised during the event will help in the construction of the MISA Training Centre, which is at the roofing level, and the budget is around K10 million.

The event started at 6:30 a.m. from Area 18 Memorial Tower to Parliament Building, and several politicians attended the event, including politicians like Atupele Muluzi, Sam Kawale, and Ezekiel Ching'oma.

President Lazarus Chakwera also showed his support for the media industry by donating K3 million.

Anthony Kasunda, the Presidential Press Secretary, representing President Chakwera, stated that the president is a champion of media freedom in the country and will always render his support.

"The president regards the media highly, and his message is simple, let the media do its work," he said.

The MISA Malawi Chairperson, Teresa Ndanga, stated that the event was important in highlighting the importance of the relationship between the media and politicians and hoped that the relationship would strengthen.

"At times, the media faces challenges when working with politicians, especially in trusting that journalists will do a good job in quoting them properly. On the other hand, journalists feel that they are most attacked by politicians," Ndanga explained.

Vice President Saulos Chilima also donated MK1 million, Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale donated MK700,000, former Speaker of Parliament Henry Chimunthu Banda donated MK500,000, and Ezekiel Ching'oma MP donated MK500,000.

Atupele Muluzi, who donated MK1 million, highlighted the importance of journalists in bringing truth and clarity to the people of Malawi.

"It is important to recognize that politicians exercise power, and journalists bring truth to power," he said.

The success of the MISA Malawi Fun Run fundraising event shows that the media and politicians can work together towards a common goal, and it is hoped that this relationship will continue to grow stronger in the future.
