Mozambique-Malawi Regional Interconnector Project is HISTORIC-Chakwera

MALAWI: President Lazarus Chakwera has described the laying of the foundation stone for the Mozambique-Malawi Regional Interconnector Project as historic because it establishes a reliable power interconnection not only between the two countries but also across the SADC region.

“The 400kV Mozambique - Malawi Transmission Line will create a link between the two countries to meet increasing electricity demand in Malawi and to create opportunities for trade in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP),” said the Malawi leader, soon after the ground-breaking ceremony for the project with President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi in Tete.

According to Chakwera, the transmission line is expected to enable an initial supply of 50 megawatts of power from Mozambique to Malawi, with the potential for an additional 60 megawatts based on future agreements between our respective power utility companies.

He also said: “I am delighted to see the project commence as it will address our power needs at the back of losing 129 megawatts from the grid due to damage caused by Cyclone Ana.”

He also mentioned how pleased he is that the construction phase of this project will provide over 1,000 jobs for both Malawians and Mozambicans.
