MP Urges Authorities to Expedite Rehabilitation of Kaunda Road in Lilongwe
MP Alfred Jiya Urges Expedited Rehabilitation of Kaunda Road in Lilongwe City Centre, writes Brenard Mwanza.
LILONGWE, MALAWI - Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City Centre Constituency, Alfred Jiya, has called on authorities to expedite the rehabilitation project of the Kaunda Road section from the Bingu National Stadium roundabout to the Chendawaka Road junction in Area 25, writes Brenard Mwanza.
In an interview, Jiya emphasized the paramount importance of the road to the residents of areas 25, 49, 50, and 51, who use it for their daily activities.
However, he highlighted that the current condition of the road, with its huge potholes resistant to maintenance, causes delays and challenges during the rainy season.
"I am optimistic that the arrangement of dualizing the road will be fulfilled, despite the reported contractual misunderstandings emanating from the devaluation of the local currency, Kwacha," Jiya said.
He further requested special consideration from the government for rehabilitating Masaf and Shire roads within Area 49. Jiya also expressed deep concern about the pathetic condition of Area 18B Road via Senti to Area 25.
"Many people have been coming to my house asking if we could just close this road to force the government to maintain it," Jiya added.
The Ministry of Transport and Public Works did not immediately respond to the current calls.
However, Jiya urged the president to enhance the processes to ensure the project stays on track, stating, “We, the people of Lilongwe City Center, will be delighted."
