MW Government challenged to complete idle projects in schools in the north

Government has been challenged to swiftly complete some projects such as hostels, classroom blocks and build more teachers' houses in various secondary schools in some districts of the northern region of Malawi.

The call was made on Thursday by stakeholders when the Deputy Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, visited a number of schools in Mzimba and Rumphi districts but also in Mzuzu City.

"We are very happy that you have visited us here in your capacity as deputy minister of education. We have a number of challenges in this community concerning our schools. For, example, at this school, Ekwendeni Community Day Secondary School, government started a project of girls' hostels and mstron's house two years ago, but the project remains stalled.

"There are also plans to finish and open doors of another school at Msiki, but the school is still not complete. So, our appeal to you as government is that you help us facilitate completion of the projects for our children here," said Morgan Tembo who is a councillor for Ekwendeni Ward.

While responding to the call, the deputy minister hailed teachers and other education stakeholders in the communities for hard work despite facing the said challenges; among others.

"We are here to appreciate the progress of the projects that are underway. The projects are meant for our learners to do well in their education. That is why we are very interested to interact with teachers and learn from you and other education stakeholders," expressed Kambauwa.

Additionally, the deputy minister acknowledged teachers for the job well done in assisting more learners to pass their exams and make it to colleges and universities. She then committed to everything possible to have the projects completed, but urged them to do what they can with the little that they have to achieve much better results.

Commenting on the same, Education Division Manager (EDM) for Northern Education Division (NED), Mzondi Moyo, said it was very impressive of the deputy minister to leave office and visit schools in his division even though she always has a lot to do at Capital Hill.

The deputy minister visited several schools including Chibavi Community Day Secondary School in Mzuzu City, Ekwendeni Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba district, Bolero Community Day Secondary School and Rumphi Teachers Training College which is almost completed in Rumphi district, among others.
