MW2063 One Year On: NPC to Assess Progress and Challenges in First Year of 10-Year Implementation Plan

Malawi: The National Planning Commission (NPC) announced that the focus of this year's Development Conference will be on the progress made in the first year of the 10-year Malawi Implementation Plan (MIP1) of the MW2063, writes Kondwani Nyondo.

The conference, set to take place between February 2 and 3, will be held under the theme "MW2063 One Year On."

During a press briefing on Tuesday in Lilongwe, NPC Director General Thomas Munthali acknowledged the external shocks that have hindered progress in the implementation plan, including the Russia-Ukraine war, COVID-19, and cyclones.

In addition to external factors, Munthali also acknowledged that the country was slow in responding to key drivers for growth such as the Mega farm, mining, and promotion of tourism.

The NPC also highlighted the fight against corruption as one of the major achievements in 2022.

The MIP1, which replaced the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDSIII), was launched in 2022 with the goal of graduating Malawi into a middle-income nation by 2030, with a per capita income of $1000 and meeting the United Nations Sustainable Goals by 2030.

The implementation of flagship projects such as mining, mega farming, and tourism is key to achieving these goals.
