Mzati Youth Organization Supports Cyclone Freddy Victims with Clothes Donation in Blantyre
Mzati Youth Organization donates clothes to cyclone Freddy victims at Lunzu camp in Blantyre, providing much-needed support, writes Happy Valirani.
LUNZU, BLANTYRE, Malawi - Mzati Youth Organization, a local youth group based in Lunzu, Blantyre, has extended a helping hand to the victims of cyclone Freddy by donating clothes to those staying at Lunzu camp, writes Happy Valirani.
The donation, consisting of clothes collected from the organization's staff members and well-wishers, was presented to the camp residents, who have been struggling with basic needs such as food and clothes.
"We felt it in our hearts that as an organization, we should intervene in supporting the people affected by cyclone Freddy after observing that people at the camp are lacking some basic needs such as food and clothes," said Alinafe Peter Uchi, the Administrative Officer for Mzati Youth Organization, in an interview.
"We are here to donate clothes that we collected from our staff members at the organization as well as well-wishers whom we approached. We know that the cyclone Freddy victims are going through difficult moments, so we thought it wise to come and give the clothes we brought, and this is our second time coming here to the camp," Peter Uchi added.
The donation was well-received by the camp residents, including Esther Kalilombe, a first-year student at a private secondary school in Lunzu.
"I am very delighted with the clothes I have received from Mzati Youth Organization. These clothes will help me, as I was in need of clothes. I thank Mzati for the donation," said Kalilombe.
However, she also mentioned that she is in need of school fees, as she has been chased away from school due to a lack of payment.
Laize Mpopo and Ted Bridge, two other recipients of the donated clothes, expressed their happiness and gratitude.
They stated that the clothes will make a difference in their lives as they lost all their belongings, including clothes when their houses were destroyed by cyclone Freddy.
They thanked all the well-wishers, organizations, and companies for their generosity and support.
Austine Njalamano, the secretary of the area civil protection committee and the chairman at the camp acknowledged the timely donation from the Mzati Youth Organization, particularly as the country is approaching the winter season.
"This donation that Mzati Youth Organization has brought will help people, as you can see that most people here have little clothes, so this will help address the problem of clothes that people have here at the camp," said Njalamano.
Alinafe Peter Uchi has called upon all well-wishers who would like to partner with Mzati Youth Organization to reach out and support other camps in Blantyre and beyond.
Mzati Youth Organization was founded in 2016 in the township of Lunzu in Blantyre with the aim of promoting girl child education, women's empowerment, and other objectives.
The organization's donation of clothes to Cyclone Freddy victims is a testament to their commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
