Mzuzu Police Officers Take Part in Mzuzu Tree Planting Exercise

Malawi-Mzuzu Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP), Fredrick Chande, led officers from Mzuzu and Lubinga police units in a tree planting exercise on February 21, 2023, writes Tionge Hara.

The exercise was conducted at the designated site for the new Lubinga Police Unit and staff houses in Area 1B new habitat.

The officers took part in the exercise as part of the national tree planting season, which was launched by the state president on December 24, 2022, under the theme "Restore the great forest landscape for livelihood security."

In an interview with AfricaBrief, Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Chande praised the officers for taking part in the tree-planting exercise.

"I would like to advise you officers that the way landscapes have been treated is detrimental to people's lives as well as environmental protection, therefore it needs to start with us officers to set a good example in accepting the responsibility for the degradation by restoring the great forest landscape," he said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Chande also committed to leading officers from lower formations in future tree-planting exercises to protect all police formations from environmental damage.

The goal of the exercise was to plant 2500 trees, but only about 400 trees were planted on the day. More trees are expected to be planted at Ekwendeni, Mtwalo, Engucwini, and Enukweni police units.

In addition to providing environmental protection, the trees at Area 1B will also act as a fence to secure the land from encroachment.

The land was made available by the Mzuzu City Council through a donation from Habitat for Humanity.
