National Water Resources Authority Engages Drillers to Bring Orderliness in Water Drilling Sector

Malawi-The National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has embarked on an initiative to engage drillers in the Northern Region of Malawi in a bid to bring sanity to the water drilling sector, writes Victor Musongole.

NWRA is set to meet drillers to educate them on their responsibilities and duties as stipulated in the Water Resources Act of 2013, including the authority given to water boards.

The move comes after a rise in the number of people drilling boreholes all over the country, with some not following the laws that govern water resources in Malawi.

The engagement meetings are meant to enlighten the drillers about the regulations, including the limitations in areas under waterboard jurisdiction.

The Public Relations Officer for NWRA, Masozi Kasambala, said that the civic education and public relations office is now in place to enhance relations and visibility.

The authority is conducting several engagement meetings to make people aware of the procedures that they need to follow when they want to drill or use water resources.

The drillers, on the other hand, are appreciative of the engagement meetings as they will be able to learn more about the Water Resources Act of 2013.

Moses Nkhata, one of the drillers based in the Northern Region, believes that the initiative will improve service delivery from borehole drillers and bring orderliness to the sector.

NWRA is mandated to regulate, manage, conserve, develop, and control water resources in Malawi.
