Newly-Built Fatima Police Unit Condemned for Substandard Construction
The Nsanje District Council Public Works Service Committee has condemned the newly built Fatima Police Unit, saying it is not user-friendly as it poses ‘threats’, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
NSANJE, Malawi- The Nsanje District Council Public Works Service Committee has condemned the newly built Fatima Police Unit, saying it is not user-friendly as it poses ‘threats’, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Nsanje North Parliamentarian Enock Masauko Chizuzu said the Public Works Committee paid a visit to his constituency to appreciate projects being implemented in the area.
Chizuzu revealed that the Fatima Police Unit's work was of substandard quality, hence the committee's recommendation to condemn it.
"It is not in line with the current government-set standards for the construction of infrastructure in the country," he alleged.
The parliamentarian also said the infrastructure in question was at the roofing stage but had developed cracks, which prompted the committee to stop the project.
The Constituency Chief further disclosed that he has already asked the council to reconsider building a similar project using the Governance to Enable Services Delivery (GESD) fund.
"The Constituency Development Fund—CDF—was used for the building of the condemned infrastructure," he said.
Nsanje District Council Public Works Service Committee Chair Cassim Husein Ngwali acknowledged inspecting the said infrastructure.
He said that after inspection, it was noted that it was below the required standard as per government requirements.
"As a committee, we condemned the building despite it being at the roofing level," said Ngwali.
On this point, the chair is appealing to all the contractors who are tasked with doing any project work and should adhere to the recommended construction standards.
