NGO gears up inclusive education among persons with albinism in Malawi

MALAWI: Malawi Human Rights Resource Center (MHRRC) is set to reach out to persons with albinism to improve their capacity through inclusive education.

Programs Officer for MHRRC Enock Chinkhuntha said that their focus is to see a culture whereby learners with albinism are taken care of in their Schools.

“We are training teachers so that they should understand issues of albinism so that they should be able to take care of persons with albinism in the process of inclusive education,” said Chinkhuntha.

He also said that they have drilled 160 teachers so that they can teach and understand students with albinism.

Chinkhuntha added that apart from training teachers they are also targeting Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs).

“We are targeting 150 HSAs from every district that we are working on as a means of raising awareness on the availability of the drugs for persons with albinism like sun screening lotion,” said Chinkhuntha.

He said they are working hand in hand with the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM), government, and other non-governmental stakeholders.

The newly elected president for APAM, Young Muhamba, said, “We will work together with our stakeholder MHRRC for the betterment of promoting inclusive education among persons living with albinism.

Muhamba further called for support from the government and other stakeholders in reaching out to people with albinism with education interventions to the persons with albinism in Malawi.
