Nkhata Bay Police Station beams as crime rates fall

Malawi: From January to June of this year, the Nkhata-Bay Police Station saw a 28 percent decrease in crime.

According to Kondwani James, the station's public relations officer, this is according to a Biannual Crime Report released by the station's Research and Planning Branch.

In 2021, the station recorded 438 criminal cases, while in 2022, the station recorded 316 cases.

Despite a decrease in crime, statistics show that robbery cases in the district have slightly increased. In 2021, eight cases of robbery were reported, compared to ten cases reported this year.

However, cases of unlawful wounding, burglary and theft, and breaking into a building and committing a felony have significantly decreased.

In addition, 41 cases of unlawful wounding were recorded in 2021, compared to 31 cases in 2022.

Similarly, the number of burglaries and thefts dropped from 45 in 2021 to 35 in 2022.

Nkhata-Bay Police Station continues to implement intensive safety and security awareness programmes with the assistance of other stakeholders such as faith leaders and a special unity committee (District Peace and Unity Committee).

The station also increases police visibility in all crime-prone areas to reduce crime fear, as well as arresting and prosecuting offenders to deter future offenders.
