North Region Police Chief engages CSOs on safety, security

Mzuzu, Malawi - Northern Region Police Commissioner Noel Kayira engaged members of civil society organizations (CSOs) in a luncheon held in Mzuzu on May 4, 2023, to discuss public safety and security, writes Tionge Hara.

During the luncheon, Kayira emphasized the critical role CSOs play in providing checks and balances on the conduct and performance of the police towards the public.

Kayira highlighted that the CSOs can help fight against corruption within the police service by sharing information on suspected corrupt tendencies among law enforcers.

Kayira said, "You are advocates for the underprivileged; hence, you are a very important sector for public safety and security."

Furthermore, Kayira shared his vision for the Northern Region, which is to provide a "quality security service for the improved livelihood of the people of the North."

On behalf of the CSOs, Charles Kajoloweka, the Executive Director of Youth and Society (YAS), expressed appreciation for the dialogue and engagement between the police and the CSOs.

Kajoloweka called for continued conversation between the two sides, which he said would help curb some pertinent issues affecting the people at large.

Rehema Patrick, representative of 'Section 30,' raised concerns about child-criminal gangs comprising both boys and girls within various locations in Mzuzu, and called for urgent action by law enforcement agencies to ensure children are protected.

Other CSOs in attendance at the luncheon included Paralegal Advisory Service, Find Your Feet, Mzuzu Youth Organization, Church and Society, Human Rights Defenders Coalition, CCJP, and many others.
