Nsanje Lalanje Legislature donates maize to cyclone-hit families

Gladys Ganda, a lawmaker in Nsanje Lalanje, has donated 400 bags of maize to 10,000 families severely affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy in her constituency, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

Malawi- Gladys Ganda, a lawmaker in Nsanje Lalanje, has donated 400 bags of maize to 10,000 families severely affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy in her constituency, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

Ganda made the donation on Friday after visiting four camps and seeing the dire need for food.

"The situation has worsened due to the two cutoffs at Sekeni and Miseu Folo in the M1 road in Chikwawa which is making it impassable to Nsanje," she said.

Ganda has appealed to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs-DoDMA to release more maize from the Humanitarian Staging Area-HSA at Bangula in Nsanje in order to avoid deaths due to hunger.

"People have completely nothing after losing all their properties, crops in the gardens which were already matured, livestock and poultry," she said.

The lawmaker also called on Non-Governmental Organizations-NGOs and wellwishers to come to her constituency with both food and non-food items.

One of the beneficiaries, Violet Dunga from Kalenso village in the area of Senior Chief Mbenje in the district, expressed her gratitude for Ganda's donation.

"The communities had nothing to eat. The registration exercise is in progress to determine the total number of flood survivors," she said.

The effects of the cyclone have caused massive destruction to infrastructure and displaced thousands of families in the southern region of Malawi.
