NSANJE, MALAWI - The Nsanje Police have arrested a 50-year-old man on allegations of being found in possession of 16 bags of fertilizer suspected to have been acquired unlawfully, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The suspect has been identified as Kalosi Zuze from Nthukuso, in the area of Senior Chief Malemia in the district.
According to District Police Station Spokeswoman Sub-Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, the suspect was nabbed on Thursday, April 27, 2023, after a tip to the Nsanje Police Station detectives.
"The bags were being loaded in a van of Chibuku Products Company and were heading to Blantyre," she said.
After receiving the tip, the detectives followed the van, which they impounded at the Lambwe roadblock.
"Searching it, 16 bags of fertilizers comprising 15 NPK and 1 urea were found without proper documents," said the spokeswoman.
She added that the driver of the van disclosed that the commodities were for the suspect, who was arrested on the spot.
The spokeswoman further revealed that the suspect admitted that the bags were his and that he only chartered the van to carry them to Blantyre.
Meanwhile, the commodity has been seized, and Zuze will appear before the court to answer an offense of being found in possession of property suspected to have been stolen.
"We continue to urge members of the public to report any suspicious activity in their communities to the police," said Sub-Inspector Zalakoma.
The Nsanje Police have appealed to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of other suspects connected to the case to come forward and assist the police with investigations.
"We would like to assure the public that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the culprits face the full force of the law," said Sub-Inspector Zalakoma.
