Ntchisi well-prepared for natural disasters during this rainy season: official

Malawi: The relief and rehabilitation officer for Ntchisi district, Rhonnie Khangamwa, said that her office is prepared for natural disasters that are expected during this year's rainy season.

Khangamwa also stated that her office has trained Area Civil Protection Committees and Village Civil Protection Committees in all seven T/As for preparedness so that they are aware of potential threats, particularly strong winds, which are major hazards in Ntchisi.

This follows the announcement by the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMSChief )'s Meteorologist Amos Mtonya that the Ntchisi district is expected to receive generally normal rainfall amounts during the 2022/2023 rainfall season, accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms, and lightning.

The district experienced devastating strong winds during the previous rainy season, causing damage to 41 houses.

During a meeting on the district-level dissemination of the 2022-2023 downscaled rainfall seasonal forecast, he stated this.

Rainfall is expected to begin in the Ntchisi district between the first and second weeks of December 2022. Cessation is scheduled for the second and third weeks of April 2023.

Dry spells of about seven days are possible in some areas in January and February.

The district's seasonal length is expected to be between 110 and 120 days.
