Old Mutual Encourages Participation in Mathematics and Science Subjects in Malawi

Old Mutual is promoting the importance of mathematics and science subjects in Malawi, as they are fundamental and essential fields of study in the country, writes Tionge Hara.

Malawi -Old Mutual is encouraging active participation in mathematics and science subjects, which are fundamental and important fields of study in the country, according to Sophie Nkonjera, Old Mutual Chief Risk Officer, writes Tionge Hara.

The National Olympiad Mathematics Awards took place at Mzuzu University on March 6, 2023.

Nkonjera stated that Old Mutual is inspiring learners and teachers to work hard by supporting this initiative.

Nkonjera said, "It's a great milestone; this year, they had 374 participants, with 95 schools making it to the finals. Less than 40 made it, which is good."

Nkonjera expressed her gratitude to the Mzuzu University Mathematics and Statistics Department for their continued support.

Professor John Kalenga Saka, the Vice-Chancellor of Mzuzu University, said celebrating successes is a great way to show encouragement.

He encouraged all students in community day secondary schools to work hard in mathematics, as it is the subject that counts.

The best female student, Lusayo Musopole from Kamuzu Academy, encouraged fellow girls to work hard and dispel the myth that Mathematics is for boys only. She said, "All that matters is a hardworking spirit and commitment."

This year, new schools like Malosa, Chaminade St. Maria Golleti participated and made it to the final stage.
