One killed, three injured in Nsanje road accident
The driver was arrested and charged with causing death by reckless driving, a violation of Section 126(1) of the Road Traffic Act.
Malawi: One person was killed and three others were injured in a road accident in Nsanje on Saturday evening, November 26, 2022.
Annie Mapesa, 40, of Sande Village, Traditional Authority Ngabu, Chikwawa District, has been identified as the deceased.
The accident occurred along the Matundu Primary School-Nsanje Boma earth road and involved a motor vehicle registration PE 6463 Scania Van driven by George Adamson, 23, of Khoviwa Village in Traditional Authority Nthiramanja in Mulanje District.
According to the traffic report, the driver was driving from Matundu Primary School to Nsanje Boma along earth road while carrying 100 bags of sweet potatoes and four passengers.
When the driver arrived in Chimombo Village, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve to the extreme nearside of the road and eventually overturn sideways.
Following the collision, one female passenger, Mapesa, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at Nsanje District Hospital, while the other three passengers suffered minor injuries and were admitted to the same hospital.
The driver was unharmed, but the vehicle's windscreen was shattered and a nearside body part was depressed.
The driver was arrested and charged with causing death by reckless driving, a violation of Section 126(1) of the Road Traffic Act.
