Organization calls for learners' participation in preservation of natural resources

MALAWI: The Go Green Save the Environment team has called on students in the county’s schools to be part of the solution in addressing climate change challenges as one way of instilling responsibility in them for cleaning their environment and caring for natural resources.

The organization made the call on Wednesday during a clean-up and waste management capacity-building exercise at Biwi LEA primary school, where students were led to clean and collect waste materials, among other activities.

Ethel Mwafulirwa, Programs Director for Go Green, stated that they are focusing on primary school students for the capacity-building exercise so that they can be a part of the solution to addressing climate change.

She said learners should be taught about waste management and how to keep their environment clean and safe when they are young.

Mwafulirwa also stated that the exercise taught the students how to use plastic materials to create other useful resources such as Eco bricks, bottle rings, manure, and other materials.

“We want the learners to take part in caring for their environment and making it clean. Learners have to know that waste materials like plastic bottles can be used for making other products,” said Mwafulirwa.

Furthermore, Mwafulirwa stated that the organization should expect to continue sensitizing more people about the importance of conserving natural resources and keeping the environment clean.

The organization wishes to see people participating in the preservation of natural resources and avoiding the depositing of waste in any way that pollutes the environment.

“Our organization will keep sensitizing people on the importance of taking care of the environment and preserving natural resources as part of addressing the climate challenges. We want companies to start using paving blocks made from plastic in order to beat plastic pollution,” added Mwafulirwa.

This event was held in honour of Earth Day, with the theme "Invest in the Planet."
