Police Arrest Two for Trafficking in Persons in Rumphi
Rumphi police have arrested two individuals for allegedly engaging in trafficking in persons within the Bale Hill area-Wezzie Mwangonde.
Malawi-Rumphi police have arrested two individuals for allegedly engaging in trafficking in persons within the Bale Hill area, writes Wezzie Mwangonde.
According to Tupeliwe Kabwilo, Rumphi police public relations officer, the suspects, Yohane Mkandawire, 23, and Nelson Mkandawire, 19, were apprehended on the night of February 15, 2023.
"During the operation, Teshel Ayel, 21, and six other Ethiopian nationals were found hidden in a curve, and the two suspects were amongst them," said Kabwilo.
The Malawian suspects have been charged with Trafficking in Persons, while the seven Ethiopian nationals have been charged with illegal entry into the country. They are expected to appear in court to answer the charges.
The police are calling on community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. Kabwilo emphasized that collaborative efforts are essential in tackling this malpractice.
"We appeal to the good citizens of Rumphi to continue working with us in order to deal with this vice," said Kabwilo.
The two Malawian suspects are from Mhungulu Village under Traditional Authority Mwankhunikira in Rumphi.
The police are continuing their investigation into the matter, said the police PRO.
