Police in Mzuzu Arrest Airtel Malawi Official for Cash Fraud

MZUZU, MALAWI - Following numerous reports from concerned individuals about missing cash from their Airtel money wallets, police in Mzuzu have arrested Jacob Singini, a customer service representative for Airtel Malawi in Mzuzu. Inspector Paul Tembo, spokesperson for Mzuzu Police, confirmed the arrest, writes Tionge Hara.
"Police instituted investigations into the matter, which led to the arrest of Jacob Singini," said Inspector Tembo.
"The suspect admitted during questioning to having defrauded a number of people through sim swapping."
Singini, whose date of birth is listed as May 27, 1994, and who is also known as VG Singini, operates under the business name Jalavikuwa D Mzimba.
The total amount involved in the fraud is believed to be in the millions, as it was taken from various accounts.
The specific amount will be determined once investigations are concluded.
"The suspect will soon appear before the court to answer the theft charge," Inspector Tembo added.
Airtel Malawi has not yet issued a statement on the arrest of its employee.
