An Islamic organization has petitioned the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi to allow Muslim nurses to be putting on their Islamic headgear called “hijab” during work.The Muslim Commission for Social Justice Director, Mr. Abdul Jameson, says denying Islamic nurses and students to put on the headgear would be violating their rights.Meanwhile, the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi says will soon meet to look into the matter. The Muslim Commission for Social Justice says it has been receiving complaints from a number of Moslem nurses and student nurses, since they are not allowed to put on the headgear called ‘hijab’.Director of the NGO, Mr. Abdul Jameson, says the Nurses and Midwives Council should reverse its stand on the issue and start allowing Moslem nurses and nursing students to be putting on the headgear while at work.Mrs. Florence Salima is the Communication Officer of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi and says that the council has received the petiotion and will look into the matter soon.The "hijab” is traditional head covering worn by Muslim women.
