Security Lapse in Nsanje to Reduce with Completion of Police Unit in 90 Days

Security lapse due to no police unit in Senior Group Village Headman Mnembe's area revealed in Nsanje meeting, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

Malawi-Lack of a police unit in the area of Senior Group Village Headman Mnembe has created a security lapse, according to information revealed during an interface meeting at Phokera Primary School ground in Nsanje on Tuesday, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

Chief Mnembe expressed concern that people have to walk long distances of about 5 kilometres to Chiromo Police Post for security services.

He also noted a rise in cases of robbery and theft of livestock in the surrounding villages, with nowhere for the communities to report such incidents.

"There has been a total security lapse in the constituency," said Nsanje Lalanje Legislature Gladys Ganda, who agreed with Mnembe.

She recalled the death of a prominent young businessman at Bangula Trading Centre in December last year.

However, the completion of a police unit within 90 days is expected to change the situation.

"This police unit project has been neglected for a long time, for over ten years, but it is time for it to be completed and operational now," Ganda said, expressing hope for a reduction of crime in the surrounding villages.

Nsanje District Council Vice Chairperson Hinest Sande said that the contractor has been given three months to complete the project and appealed to the communities to work together with the contractor.

Sande also urged the contractor to avoid substandard work, noting that it would be a great loss to the people of the area and the entire district.

The completion of the police unit is expected to significantly reduce the security lapse in the area and provide a more efficient and effective security system for the people.
