Senior Chief Chimombo Calls for Urgent Government Intervention on Nsanje's Hunger Crisis

Malawi - Senior Chief Chimombo in Nsanje has called on the government to urgently send maize to the people, failing which there will be more deaths due to hunger, which is at its climax in the district, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

In an exclusive interview with this publication on Sunday, the senior traditional leader said there is not a single grain in the Admarc outlets, and vendors are taking advantage of the situation by hiking the price of the staple food.

"A container of five kilograms is sold for between K4,500 and K5,000, which cannot be enough even for a family of four people," he lamented.

The senior chief attributed the challenge to the cut-offs in the M1 road in Chikwawa and Nsanje, which have been caused by Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

On this point, the senior traditional leader is calling upon the government to speed up the rehabilitation works at Sekeni and Miseu Folo in Chikwawa and Phanga Bridge in Nsanje so that there can be a flow of vehicles to and from Blantyre.

The hunger crisis in Nsanje has been worsened by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which devastated most districts in the southern region of Malawi.

The senior chief's urgent call for government intervention highlights the dire situation that the people of Nsanje are facing and the need for immediate action to alleviate their suffering.
