Senior Chief Chimombo Urges Authorities to Relocate Vendors to Authorized New Market in Nsanje
Nsanje Chief urges relocation of Tengani mobile vendors to new market, citing safety concerns, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
NSANJE, Malawi - Senior Chief Chimombo of Nsanje has called on the authorities in the district to relocate the vendors of Tengani mobile market to the authorized new market in the area. Chimombo made the call during an Ordinary District Full Council meeting on Monday, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
"Let us allow them to be using the new market rather than waiting for the full completion of the market," said Chimombo.
He added that allowing the vendors to operate from the new market would also help protect some of the government properties in the market.
Nsanje District Chief Planning Officer, Smith Mnenula, acknowledged the situation at the mobile market in Tengani and emphasized the need to inform the communities about the development before moving to the new premises.
Mnenula also explained that the construction works at the Tengani new market are being carried out by the Central Government, and while some infrastructural works on the ground are yet to be completed, almost 90% of the work has been done and it should not affect the vendors' occupation of the new market.
Grace Billie, one of the mobile vendors, expressed the challenges of operating at the mobile market, citing the risk of vehicles running over their commodities and the lack of protection for their properties in an open space.
"Thanks to Almighty God, there have been no single road accidents involving vendors since the operations," said Billie.
The call by Senior Chief Chimombo to relocate the vendors to the authorized new market has gained attention from local authorities and vendors alike.
The move is expected to provide a safer and more organized environment for the vendors to conduct their businesses while also protecting government properties in the market.
