Stop calling older persons WITCHES, WIZARDS-Deputy Minister

Malawi: Deputy Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Agness Nkusa-Nkhoma, has condemned the behaviour of calling older persons bad names, such as witches and wizards.

She stated this during the commemoration of older persons at Chiwavi ground in Mzuzu on Friday, October 21, 2022, where she was the honoured guest.

Nkusa-Nkhoma emphasised that anyone found will face the law from now on because it is wrong.

The Deputy Minister also stated that the Tonse government is keeping their promise to Malawians, especially the elderly, of providing them with K15,000 per month.

Malawi Network for Older Persons Organization (MANEPO) Executive Director Andrew Kavala stated that this day is very important to them.

Speaking to AfricaBrief, Kavala stated that the main focus is on order women because they suffer more violence than men, hence the need to assist these women.

Meanwhile, Kavala reminded the Tonse Government to fulfil their campaign promise to provide these order personnel with monthly allowances in 2020.

Kavala said older women face more violence, thus the need to help them have a little something, and he also condemned their behaviour of accusing them of witchcraft.

Meanwhile, Bennex Mwamlima, Mzuzu City's Member of Parliament, said it's good to be helping these older people because the Bible says we should honour and respect our parents to extend our days on earth, and he gave out K1 million as one committed person to them.
