Lilongwe, Malawi - The Takulandirani Malawi International Tourism Expo (MITE 2023) kicked off on the 26th to 27th of April at the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, showcasing the country's natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and tourism potential, writes Winston Mwale.
The two-day event, organized by the Ministry of Tourism, brought together various players in the tourism industry, including tour operators, hoteliers, and digital marketing companies.
Malawi Telecommunications Limited, one of the participants, was on hand to provide fast and affordable internet to visitors using their new technology, LTE.
According to the company, they are ready to visit clients at their homes or offices to provide this service.
"We have joined the Ministry of Tourism and the whole nation at the International Expo at BICC. As we welcome all the guests to our city, they get to taste our clean and safe water," said Lilongwe WaterBoard officials, who were also on hand to provide potable water to attendees through water dispensers stationed in different spots.
Akometsi, a digital marketing partner for the event, expressed their pride at being part of the expo.
"We feel honoured that our digital marketing skills were sought after by the Ministry of Tourism. This shows how much we are establishing ourselves in the market and are always ready to serve," they said.
Patrick Chimpikiso, representing Ultimate Travel, stated that the expo was a great opportunity to see the massive potential that Malawi has for becoming one of the world's top travel destinations.
He applauded the efforts of the Honourable Minister Vera Kamtukule and her team at the Department of Tourism, as well as the different organizations that partnered to deliver the showcase.
Ida Chicker Chabs, who also attended the event, said that tourism offers excellent opportunities for emerging economies and developing countries.
"It creates jobs, strengthens the local economy, contributes to local infrastructure development, can help conserve the natural environment and cultural assets and traditions, and can reduce poverty and inequality," she added.
Various players showcased their products and services, and visitors had the opportunity to learn more about Malawi's attractions, such as its national parks, cultural heritage sites, and beaches.
"I found it impressive how full the hall was with exhibitors. Secondly, at each of the stands I took the time to visit, the owners were very willing to give out information. Thumbs up to the ministry and all the exhibitors... The event continues up to the end of the day," said Kondwanie Chirembo, who attended the event.
The expo was a success and provided a platform for various stakeholders to network, learn, and showcase their products and services.
With its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, Malawi has great potential to become a top travel destination in the world, and events like the Takulandirani Malawi International Tourism Expo help to bring the nation one step closer to achieving that goal.
