Three nabbed for possessing fake MW currency

Malawi: Police in Kawale in Lilongwe have arrested three men for possessing, uttering, and forging counterfeit currency, all of which violate sections 356 and 360 of the penal code, writes Sub Inspector Mabvuto Phiri, PRO-Kawale Police Station.

Stain Ngomani, 48, Robson Sauzande, 42, and Mac Donald Kachepa, 29, have been identified as the suspects.

According to reports, on August 10, 2022, the first two suspects went to an agro-business shop to purchase two bags of maize worth K34,000, which they paid in cash in the form of K2,000 banknotes.

The shop owner realized the cash given was fake after performing a forensic eye check, prompting him to report the matter to the Area 23 Police Unit.

Investigations were launched, leading to the arrest of the first two suspects, who later revealed the source and producer of fake money to be the third suspect, who was later apprehended at his Kaphiri home. The detectives also seized a laptop and printer used to print the counterfeit money.

The suspects were also found with K524,000 cash in K2000 fake notes after being searched.

The trio is scheduled to appear in court soon to answer the charges levelled against them.

Ngomani is from Kwanjiri Village in Chiladzulu's Traditional Authority Mpama, Sauzande is from Temeka Village in Blantyre's Traditional Authority Lundu, and Kachepa is from Amidu Village in Salima District's Traditional Authority Maganga.
