Malawi court defends right to protest, dismisses govt petition | Africanews

Malawi: Human Rights Defenders (HRDC), who led mass protests against the previous regime, have urged the Tonse Alliance Government not to take Malawians for granted.

HRDC National Chairperson, Gift Trapence, said in a statement released on Thursday, June 23, 2022, that the current regime should rather walk the walk on their electoral promises.

He stated that the government must begin doing things correctly by removing dead wood from its ranks and file, which is stifling progress.

According to Trapence, the President should reshuffle his team and bring in capable people rather than enlisting friends and cronies who have self-interests rather than the country.

He said: “We call upon the Administration to listen to the cries of its citizens who are heavily burdened by poor economic policies that are directly resulting in the rising cost of living.”

The rights activists cited indecisiveness and slow decision-making, corruption, fraud fight vs. clearing the rubble, and nepotism as some of the issues the Tonse regime should address in their statement.

The government has made no immediate response to the statement.
