Tragedy Strikes Mzimba District: Two Men Drown in Kawanda River While Traveling to Chimfwansala Village

Due to the increasing pressure of the running water during heavy rains, the vehicle overturned as the group was attempting to cross the river, becoming stuck in the mud.

Malawi: Two men, Penjani Kanyimbo, 51, and Godfrey Mbizi, 48, drowned in the Kawanda River in Mzimba District's Enukweni area while traveling to Chimfwansala Village in a Toyota Hilux vehicle as part of a group of six, according to the Mzuzu Police, writes Tionge Hara.

Due to the increasing pressure of the running water during heavy rains, the vehicle overturned as the group was attempting to cross the river, becoming stuck in the mud.

However, only two people—Kanyimbo and Mbizi—were able to make it out alive.

While the body of Mbizi is still missing, that of Kanyimbo has been found and taken to Mzuzu Central Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

"Police is advising members of the general public to avoid crossing flooding rivers during the rainy season to avoid preventable incidents," said Assistant Spokesperson for Mzuzu Police, Constable Mercy Chitonde.

The Mzuzu Police are investigating the incident and have launched a search operation to locate the missing body of Mbizi.

The families of the victims have been informed and are receiving support from local authorities.
