Two killed, 13 injured in Rumphi road accident

Malawi: Two people have been killed and 13 others injured in Rumphi District in northern Malawi after a motor vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a road accident in Chiweta, Boliwoli Hills on Sunday evening.

Solomon Msiska, 25, of Kayera Village under Traditional Authority Mwasambo in Karonga district, and Wakisa Mwamondwe, whose full name is unknown, have been identified as the two deceased.

The Fuso Fighter lorry, registration number KA 5148, was driven by Mathews Matemba, 37, of Mwenekawe Village, Traditional Authority Kilupula in Karonga, and carried 55 passengers who were members of the Chipangano Church who had gone to Euthini for church service and were on their way to Karonga.

According to Rumphi Police Spokesperson Tupeliwe Kabwilo, upon arrival at the said location, the driver lost control of the motor vehicle and drove to the extreme offside of the road, where it overturned several times before being blocked by trees and severely damaged.

Following the collision, the two passengers mentioned above suffered severe head injuries and were pronounced dead at Luwuchi Health Centre.

The driver and 13 other passengers survived with serious injuries, while others suffered minor injuries and are being treated at Rumphi District Hospital.

The police have urged drivers to be cautious at all times in order to avoid a similar incident.
