Uncle Harvest on TONSE ALLIANCE AND PARTY IDENTITIES

When those Malawians that stood on long lines as early as 4am on that cold winter morning on 23rd June 2020 to vote for the Lazarus Chakwera-Saulos Chilima Presidential ticket under the Tonse Alliance banner, they were not voting for MCP, UTM or any other of the Alliance parties.

Malawians were voting for change, and the fundamental transformation and development of Malawi.

Malawians had the confidence that Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima would lead an alliance of nine political parties in the social-economic transformation of Malawi.

The vote that Malawians gave these leaders was a five year long mandate that does not expire until 2025.

What Malawians therefore expect to hear from these leaders is how they are engaging in the social-economic transformation programmes of the country, how they are progressing in the fight against corruption and the building of national consensus and unity.

Any talk or action that seeks to divert the attention of the President and the Vice President from this agenda and promote individual and party identities and personal egos is unacceptable.

Malawians sacrificed their personal comfort, safety and security marching on the streets of the cities, towns and locations of this country in the face of teargas, police boots and bullets not so that they can hear your directionless and purposeless noise and watch your egoistic dances.

Any political leader or party that wants to now depart from the purpose which Malawians voted for the Tonse Alliance, is not only shortsighted but is also committing political suicide.

We did not vote for MCP. We did not vote for UTM, nor PP or any other Alliance party partner. We voted for Tonse Alliance and it's transformational agenda.

A politician who thinks is strategizing for 2025 and thinks a party strategy that excludes an alliance or better still an amalgamation of parties, lives in a Surf bubble that will soon burst.

That strategy will never win that political party the 50 percent plus 1 majority constitutional requirement.

What needs to be emphasized here is that Tonse Alliance must deliver on the promises of social-economic transformation of this country, the uprooting of corruption and the building of national consensus and unity.

Failure to do so will result in the loss of public trust and confidence not only on Tonse Alliance but also on the political parties that form the Alliance, separately.

Malawians are going to judge you on fulfilled promises and not on your individual small minded party agendas. If you want to sustain the love and support Malawians gave you in June 2020, fulfill your promises, meet their expectations, demonstrated servant leadership.
