Malawi - Mzuzu Police Station has arrested a 22-year-old University of Livingstonia student, MacNever Binya Chinyama, for attempting suicide with a knife, writes Tionge Hara.
According to Assistant Spokesperson for Mzuzu Police, Constable Rose Chipyola, the incident occurred on March 20, 2023, at around 3:00 p.m. at the University of Livingstonia Kaning'ina campus within Mzuzu City.
The Dean of Students at the university revealed that Chinyama is a first-year student who was initially admitted to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Agribusiness Management.
However, during the registration process, it was discovered that Chinyama did not qualify for the program and was instead redirected to study for a Certificate in Business Administration.
This decision allegedly frustrated Chinyama, who then attempted to kill himself using a knife in front of his fellow students.
The police rescue team managed to apprehend the suspect and detain him. Investigations are currently underway, and Chinyama will appear in court soon to face charges of attempted suicide.
Police are advising members of the public to seek counselling for mental health issues rather than resorting to actions that may conflict with the law.
Chinyama, who hails from Mpeta village T/A Kafuzira in Nkhotakota district, is currently in police custody.
