UN,Qatar Launch Fifth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC5)

Qatar.-The Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) has officially been opened with a flag-raising ceremony in Qatar, writes Matiisetso Mosala from DOHA, Qatar.

The Qatar National Convention Centre will host the conference from March 5th to 9th, bringing together global leaders, civil society organizations, youth, and media to discuss the sustainable development of the world’s 46 LDCs.

The UN High Representative Rabab Fatima announced the opening of the venue, noting that the flags of Qatar and the UN represent their shared commitment to the LDCs' expectations and ambitions.

Fatima added, “LDC5 provides us with a once-in-a-decade opportunity to put global attention on the most vulnerable countries in the world."

The conference aims to enhance access to international markets, address climate injustice, and develop public-private partnerships for the LDCs’ recovery from multiple and concurrent crises.

High Representative Fatima highlighted the importance of investing in the LDCs’ capacity for dynamic manufacturing and service industries, job creation, and strengthening their value chains.

The conference will also focus on accelerating the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and delivering on the Doha Programme of Action to ensure LDCs are not left behind.

Notable speakers expected to attend the conference from Africa include representatives from Lesotho, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, and Angola, among others.
