USAID Malawi provides $350,000 in support to fight Cholera outbreak

Malawi: The USAID Malawi Momentum Tikweze Umoyo project has provided $350,000 in support to combat the ongoing cholera outbreak in the country, writes Alinafe Nyanda.

The funding will aid in coordinating and managing response efforts in the districts of Chitipa, Karonga, Nkhotakota, Kasungu, and Salima.

During a ceremony to handover medical supplies to the Salima District Health Office, Chief of Party for the Momentum Tikweze Umoyo project, Mirriam Mangochi, stated that this support is part of the project's efforts to assist the Government of Malawi in managing the cholera outbreak, which was declared a national emergency in December 2021.

Reuben Chikadza, Salima District Environmental Health Officer, commented on the donation, stating that the support from the Momentum Tikweze Umoyo project will be instrumental in containing and managing the disease in the district.

The medical supplies include chlorine, face masks, cannulas, disposable aprons, alcohol swabs, hand washing soap, gloves, and giving sets.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, all 29 districts have reported cholera cases since the confirmation of the first case in March 2022 in Machinga district.

This is one of the worst cholera outbreaks in years, and government efforts are being strengthened by this donation.
