US-based GreenMet to supply 15m metric tonnes of fertilizer to Malawi

Malawi: Smallholder farmers could soon breathe a sigh of relief following revelations that GreenMet has agreed to supply to the Malawi Government 15 million metric tonnes of fertilizer every month, writes Watipaso Mzungu.

GreenMet is a US-based company focused on developing the infrastructure for sustainable, reliable and secure supply chains of rare earth metals and minerals.

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera struck the deal when he held bilateral talks with the company's Chief Executive Officer, Drew Horn, in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Chawezi Banda, a Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) reporter accompanying President Chakwera to the United States, stated in an interview on Wednesday that GreenMet, through its subsidiary, has expressed interest in investing in Malawi's mining sector as a way of spreading its risk and diversifying.

Banda stated that Horn has assured him that his legal team is working with Malawi's Attorney General to finalise the agreement's paperwork.

"We identified a business opportunity in Malawi, and our goal has been to form close ties with the government in a mutually beneficial business arrangement," Horn explained.

Later that day, President Chakwera met with Tim Hanstand, Chief Executive Officer of the Chandler Foundation, to discuss possible collaboration between Malawi and his foundation.
