Vegan Africa Waste Solutions transforms waste into useful products in Mzuzu City

The company, which was founded in 2020, is turning waste into organic fertilizer, briquettes, and bricks made from plastic. By doing so, they are helping to promote sustainable development and reduce plastic waste.
According to Sustainable Development Goal 12, efficient and environmentally friendly management of materials is critical to long-term development and economic growth.
Vegan Africa Waste Solutions is supporting this goal by ensuring that waste is used in a sustainable way to create useful products.
Chancy Chirwa, the Managing Director for Vegan Africa, explained the company's mission: "We want to see people managing their wastes in a better and more useful way in our city and in the country. There are so many useful things that can be produced from waste. With the skyrocketing prices of chemical fertilizer, people can learn to turn wastes into manure, which is cheaper to produce, the same waste can be turned into briquettes for cooking."
Chirwa also stated that producing manure from waste is consistent with people's preference for organically produced foods and serves as an alternative to chemical fertilizer.
Organic fertilizers made from waste can be cheaper than chemical fertilizers, and they improve soil fertility.
As a result, there has been an increase in the demand for organic fertilizer produced by Vegan Africa Waste Solutions.
Daile Msopa, a regular user of organic fertilizers, has experienced firsthand the benefits of using these products.
"Since I started using them, my maize and bean harvests have greatly improved," Msopa said.
Vegan Africa Waste Solutions has not only found a way to promote sustainable waste management, but it has also created job opportunities for more than 11 people.
Asiyatu Filipo, one of the employees at the Msilo dumping site, shared how her life has changed since she started working for the company. She is now able to pay back loans that her family owed other people.
In addition to their work at the Msilo dumpsite, Vegan Waste Management Company is also collecting garbage in residential areas, including Mzuzu Shoprite and Mzuzu International Academy.
The company is even partnering with Technical Entrepreneurial and Vocational Training-TEVET to offer courses in waste management so that more people can learn how to produce their own organic fertilizers.
