YICC Launches Two-Day GBV Campaign in Chinsapo to Combat Increasing Incidents of Child Abuse, Gender-Based Violence

In an interview, the organization's Executive Director, Bridget Chaponda, explained that the campaign was organized in response to the rising cases of child abuse and GBV in the Chinsapo area.

Malawi: The Youth Innovational Center for Change (YICC), a local organization based in Lilongwe, held a two-day campaign against gender-based violence (GBV) in Chinsapo from December 31, 2022 to January 1, 2023, writes Chisomo Phiri.

In an interview, the organization's Executive Director, Bridget Chaponda, explained that the campaign was organized in response to the rising cases of child abuse and GBV in the Chinsapo area.

The campaign aimed to sensitize young pregnant mothers, children, and the elderly about child abuse and GBV and inform them of where to report such cases.

Chaponda noted that there has been an increase in child labour in the area, with children being sent to sell products late at night or during the day instead of going to school, which puts them at risk of dropping out.

YICC Project Coordinator Geoffrey Bwanali emphasized the importance of protecting all children from abuse in order to create a self-sustaining future generation.

Sergeant Edward Alufayi of the Chinsapo Police Station praised YICC for the campaign and assured them that the police are ready to consider and take action on reported cases of abuse.

During the campaign, YICC also donated various items to the elderly, children, and young pregnant mothers living in Chinsapo.

The organization's main goal is to empower youth by developing their talents and helping them become self-reliant.
