Youth network calls for climate justice

MALAWI: As a step toward combating climate change, the National Youth Network for Climate Change (NYNCC) has called for the just division, sharing, and equitable distribution of benefits, burdens, and responsibilities.

Dominic Nyasulu, the organization's director, stated during the Earth Commemoration Day on Saturday in Mchinji that there is a need for collaborative efforts in healing the planet.

“There is a need to join hands in repairing the earth through natural processes by checking the interactions among plants, animals and the environment,” said Nyasulu.

He also emphasized the importance of using indigenous knowledge in environmental rehabilitation to improve environmental conservation.

Tione Phwandaphwanda, Project Manager for Jesuits Centre for Ecology and Development (JCED), commented on the same issue, saying that they will bring together various stakeholders to champion environmental management issues.

“We will involve cultural leaders, students, non-governmental organizations and experts in promoting environmental conservation through indigenous knowledge,” said Phwandaphwanda.

He also promised to do everything possible to help communities adapt to the effects of climate change.

Ben Michael Makhamba, a custodian of culture, echoed Phwandaphwanda on the importance of raising community awareness about issues relating to various aspects of culture and indigenous knowledge in environmental conservation.
