Zomera Fruit Propagation Donates 40+ Trees to Promote Fruit Access

MZUZU, Malawi - In an effort to promote access to fruits for local communities, Zomera Fruit Propagation, a Mzuzu-based enterprise, donated over 40 fruit trees to the people of Njiri area in Chigwere, Nkhata Bay district, on Thursday, writes Victor Musongole.

Speaking after the donation, Zomera Fruit Propagation Executive Director, Matrida Mlotha, expressed the organization's intention behind the donation.

"We have donated the fruit trees to people so that they have access to fruits at their homes, and can act as a supplement to their income by selling fruits," Mlotha said.

Mlotha further explained that the donated trees are expected to start bearing fruit after 14 months, which is a shorter time compared to ungrafted trees.

"We have donated these grafted trees, which bear fruits a bit earlier. We expect that they will bear fruit in 14 months. This was also part of our social responsibility," Mlotha said in an interview.

The Chairperson for Chigomezgo Village Savings and Loans, Martha Shaba, expressed gratitude for the donation and pledged to take care of the trees for future fruit production and sales.

"We are very grateful to Zomera Fruit for this donation. We will make sure we take care of the trees to see the fruits in the future, and we have plans to buy more trees from them in the future," Shaba said.

Zomera Fruit Propagation is known for its expertise in fruit propagation and selling fruit nurseries, focusing on promoting access to fruits and supporting income-generation activities in local communities.

The donation of fruit trees to the people of the Njiri area is in line with their commitment to social responsibility and promoting fruit production at the household level.
